Heat Pump Thermostats Heat pump thermostats control the reversing valve (O/B) on the heat pump, using the compressor for heating and air conditioning. Because heat pumps control both heating and cooling, a heat pump thermostat is necessary for reversing the valve to the correct direction flow of refrigerant.
